Fantasy Fest 2012

Gina Pacelli at Fantasy Fest in Key West, FloridaThis year, I decided to add a touch of craziness to my Halloween. So, when my friend, Elaine, asked me to join her and her friend, John, at Fantasy Fest in Key West, how could I say no?

This year’s theme: A-Conch-Alypse

The dress code: Clothing optional. Body paint highly encouraged.

The rules: What rules?

My alarm went off at 6:15 a.m. on Saturday, October 27. I was super wired as I barely slept the night before. I was too excited. I hit the snooze button — out of habit. I listened to the next song that came on the radio. I was restless and tired. Excited and ready. Into the shower I went.

The drive down was beautiful (as usual), but uneventful. We just wanted to reach our destination…The Florida Keys Overseas HighwayWe finally made it to Key West, expectations high. Off to a cute, little  place for some tasty fish and cocktails we went. Next up? Duval Street, of course. Around town we wandered in our traveling clothes, while others were kicking off the festivities dressed to demand attention.

We went to the rooftop of the La Concha Hotel to catch a fantastic view of all the action, complimented by Caribbean blue water… Although I am usually one to stop and enjoy the beauty around me, it was time to move on. We came to people watch and immerse ourselves with the crazy vibe only Fantasy Fest can offer…

Duval Street Key West

Travel tip: Take the elevator to the rooftop of the La Concha Hotel for some spectacular views of Key West.

Next up? A place known as the Garden of Eden, which is a clothing optional bar. This was our first taste of complete nudity… Mid-afternoon, overlooking Duval Street, naked bodies swinging to the vibrations of music around us.

Travel tip: Check out the Garden of Eden mid-afternoon. Maybe you will luck out like we did and receive a free wristband for the night. Cost savings: $25 per person

Oh, but there was still so much to explore… Bodies being painted in preparation for the evening’s festivities… A stop in an art gallery scored us entry to a private party to meet the artist, Bill Mack… A body paint contest… So many sights to soak in, so much to experience, so precious was our time…

A few moments at our hotel allowed us to prep for the evening. A quick shower, a glass of wine, and costume time. And, so we emerged…

And we were off… to catch the parade… to see more costumes… to see more nudity… to meet an artist… to experience whatever adventure Fantasy Fest had in store for us….

To be continued…
