An Open Canvas

Delray Beach, Florida Rooftop Pool

Yes, I am a little spoiled…

My friend, Amanda, once told me I am too busy. She said I need to leave time on my calendar for the unexpected. Sometimes this proves to be difficult, as I have many commitments and many different friends. However, with some effort, I try to do this every once in awhile.

When Saturday rolled around, I had no plans for the evening. My mom had invited me to visit her in Naples for the weekend, but I decided to follow the advice of Amanda. And so, I had an open canvas.

I started my day practicing hot yoga at Hot Yoga of Delray, with my friend Valerie and her daughter, Chloe. When Val asked me to join them for smoothies, I was able to say, “yes,” as opposed to declining and rushing off to my next commitment. Nice.

After my smoothie, I made my way back to my apartment and proceeded to make my way up to the rooftop to sunbathe. A lazy day by the pool with the sun beating down on me was just what I needed. I actually hadn’t done that for awhile, and the heat felt fabulous.

Tai Jo in City PlaceA few hours later, a plan began to emerge. My friend, Elaine, had an extra ticket to the Miami City Ballet at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach. Awesome.

I met Elaine and a few others at Tai Jo in City Place, where I had some delicious sushi. We then headed over to the Kravis Center to see the Miami City Ballet perform Program II: Tradition & Innovation.

I hadn’t been to a ballet for an extremely long time. In fact, I was probably a kid or teen watching the Nutcracker, a little bored. I wasn’t sure what to expect or whether I would enjoy the performance. Those were the thoughts that ran through my head, as I sat in my box seat next to my friends.

And so the show began, and the dancing blew me away. The dancers were extremely graceful and flexible. The way they moved was unbelievable. As I watched them stand on their toes, I wondered if their feet were all banged up like Natalie Portman’s in Black Swan. And then, my thoughts started to Kravis Center in West Palm Beachfade away, as I let myself be memorized by music, the dancing, the allure of the ballet.

Intermission. Conversation. We talked a bit about the male and female dancers — how they were in such great shape. I learned that the more men work out their legs, the more desire they feel. Fascinating.

The show went on. My favorite part was when the pianist played on stage, and a male and female dancer flitted about – as if they were gliding through the air.

Kravis Center in West Palm Beach, FloridaAn empty canvas turned out to be a wonderful evening, full of delightful visions. I discovered I enjoy the ballet, opening my eyes to new possibilities. And, so, an empty canvas allowed room for the unexpected, a little excitement, and a whole new experience.
