“I would rather die of passion than of boredom.” – Vincent Van Gogh

Last summer, one of the ladies in my GNO (girls’ night out) group suggested wine and painting at Vino Van Gogh. I am not an artist, and I was not very interested in the idea. However, I agreed thinking I would drink some wine, hang out, and attempt to paint. After all, I am open to trying new things. A little over a year later, I have completed four paintings at Vino Van Gogh, all of which I actually like.

Tip: Go outside of your comfort zone, and be open to trying new things. You never know what new hobbies and/or talents you will discover.

I was asked what I wanted to do for my birthday, so I chose painting. Lucky for me, Vino Van Gogh had a beautiful sunset, water, and dock painting scheduled on the actual day. The painting was a little more challenging than the ones I’ve done in the past, but I was game.

When I paint, I get totally lost in the moment. I enjoy mixing the colors and seeing what transpires on my canvas. Although everyone is given the same direction, each painting comes out different. The first time I painted flowers, mine were wispy like Japanese blossoms and resembled two people dancing. I did not see the two stick figures until one of my friends pointed this out to me. Now when I look at this painting, I see a much deeper meaning which only my subconscious could have created. I find this fascinating.

My birthday arrived, and we all met at the cute, artsy Vino Van Gogh studio in Delray Beach, Florida. Some of the girls had painted before, while others were experiencing the activity for their first time. The instructions were so good that almost everyone left with a beautiful painting. Those who did not like their painting still had fun playing with colors, enjoying the jovial atmosphere, and socializing.

Thank you, Brenda, for planning an awesome birthday party, and thank you to all who celebrated with me. I am grateful to have spent the evening with a fantastic group of women.

Have you ever tried painting? What was your experience like? What is something you did not want to do but tried anyways and loved? What did you learn about yourself? Share your thoughts and stories below.
