FL: Paddle Boarding in Fort Lauderdale

Paddle Boarding“The cure for anything is salt water, sweat, tears or the sea.” – Isak Dinesen

I have lived in South Florida for a little over a decade. Soon, I will be packing my car and moving home to Boston. How do I want to spend my last few days here? In the sun, on the water, and with my friends.

Yesterday, I spent the day paddle boarding with my friend, Stephanie. We booked our excursion through Sunrise Paddleboards, which is located in Fort Lauderdale. They were the third paddle boarding company I called, the most accommodating, and they had the best customer service. That is why we chose them.

We purchased the Eco-tour and paddled with a group. We watched a video on how to paddle board before getting out on the water. The staff helped us on our boards, and off we went.

I have gone paddle boarding before, but not for a very long time. Onto my knees I went. When I stood up, my balance was off. Instead of getting back on my knees, I tried to fix my shaky legs by repositioning myself on the board. I knew I was going to come crashing down, so I jumped into the water. Although my goal was not to fall, the water was refreshing and my lips tasted salty. Others saw me and were tempted to go for a quick swim because I made it look fun. I am amused when people want to imitate me.

I was the first one in, and I scurried to get back on my board. I am afraid of what I cannot see in the depths of the darkness. We were told the waterways did not have any sharks or alligators, only manatees. I still did not want anything touching me.

This time, I found the “sweet spot,” and I was ready to go. Through the canals we paddled, surrounded by lush mangroves. We worked our abs and arms, as the sun bronzed our skin.

Paddle boarding was a perfect way to unwind and enjoy the beauty around us. The million thoughts of packing, moving, saying goodbye, wrapping things up at the office, and finding a new job slowly started to fade away. I became totally engrossed in my experience.
