TR Street Foods in Boston“If you really want to make a friend, go to someone’s house and eat with him… the people who give you their food give you their heart.” – Cesar Chavez

After almost 15 years of living in the sun, I found my heart yearning for home. That’s when I packed my bags and headed to Boston, Massachusetts.

Yesterday, I was in the city for an interview. As I checked out my surroundings, I realized I may be in the general vicinity of my friend’s, Louis’, restaurants, Tavern Road and TR Street Foods. I have dined at Tavern Road before, and I loved everything. I had never had a chance to check out his hot, little lunch spot, and I was curious. I also wanted to catch up with my old friend.

At 10:08 a.m., I texted him, “I have an 11:00 interview on High Street. Is TR around here? Are you in today?”

No response. Typical from a man who spends long nights in Tavern Road’s kitchen cooking up delicious meals for his guests.

Once I finished my interview, I decided to have Siri help me out. I realized I could walk to TR Street Foods in about 15 minutes. Despite my goosebumps, I decided to head over and surprise Louis.

When I arrived, I asked if he was in. He had not shown up yet, and the hostess was not sure when he would arrive. I placed my order, and texted him again, “I’m at TR Street Foods…”

This time I got a response, “I’ll be there in 30.”

I put a hold on my order, sat at a table, and went through some job alerts. I waited; and I waited some more. I decided to eat.

Lamb Meatballs at TR Street Foods in Boston

I ordered the lamb meatball sandwhich with harissa, yogurt, and pita. I had no idea what harissa was, but the spiciness was amazing and complimented the lamb so well. I could eat the lamb meatballs every day. That’s how amazing they were.

Chocolate Chip Cookie at TR Street FoodsI got thirsty, so I got some water. There was one last chocolate chip cookie sitting on the counter. I remember Tania telling me how the cookies Louis had given her kids were amazing. I decided to try one while waiting for my friend. Tania was right. The cookie was super moist and filled with loads of chocolate.

Louis finally arrived, and we caught up on life. After a little while, my cousin’s, Anthi’s, husband, Andrew, randomly walked in for lunch. He did a double take when he saw me before joining our conversation. He ordered a steak and cheese sandwhich. Louis and I exchanged a smile because we had just been discussing how the lamb and steak and cheese sandwhiches are the two top favorites on TR Street Foods’ menu.

I had a wonderful day. I loved seeing my old friend and running into Andrew. The world suddenly felt very small again in a very comforting way. I felt at home.
