Boston: Granary Burying Ground

Granary Burying Ground“History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.” – Lord Acton

When my friend, Elaine, and her boyfriend, Daryl, came to visit me, they wanted to explore Boston‘s history. This included checking out the graves of historical figures in Granary Burial Ground, located along the Freedom Trail.  Although I was raised in Boston’s suburbs, I never stumbled upon this cemetery, which was established in 1660.

As we walked, I wondered, ‘who is buried here? What is the appeal of flying so far to hang out in a cemetery?’ How easily I had forgotten the day I spent with friends searching for Jim Morrison’s grave in France years ago.

We followed the free maps we were given, and we were brought back to America’s roots. A few notable citizens who are buried here include Samuel AdamsBenjamin Franklin‘s parents, John HancockJames Otis,  and Paul Revere. There was a stone for the Boston Massacre, which filled my heart with sorrow. We also saw a gravestone for Mother Goose, which was kind of fun.

I learned something new about my city’s past. People all over the world travel miles to catch a glimpse of America’s history. I was reminded not to ignore the little treasures in my backyard.
