When my friend, Elaine, came to visit me for the 4th of July, she wanted to go whale watching in Cape Cod. She found a whale watching excursion through Hyannis Whale Watcher Cruises.

Growing up in Lynnfield, Massachusetts, I had gone on whale watches as a kid. However, I always left a little disappointed by the lack of whales. I was skeptical, but I was also game to go on this adventure with her. I had not tried whale watching for years, and I love seeing animals in their natural habitat.

Through the ocean we traveled, spying the beauty of the Cape. Out into the deep we went, wondering what we would encounter.

When we finally hit the sweet spot, an announcer let us know they had spotted a whale. Everyone went over to that side of the ship. I did not get the best viewing spot, and I missed it. I prayed this would not be the only whale we saw. My heart sank a little, as I recalled the days of my youth chasing whales without much luck.

Another whale was spotted, and of course everyone ran to that side of the boat. Being short, I was having a difficult time seeing over the mass of tall folks in front of me. I finally maneuvered through the crowd to a place up front, where I hung out for the rest of the ride.

And then, all of the sudden, whales were popping up everywhere. They gave us quite a show as they twirled around the water in a whale dance known as breaching.  To see a whale breaching on a whale watching tour is rare. To see whales breaching multiple times during an excursion, like we did, was quite the treat. We realized we were very lucky as the whales put on quite a show for us. We did not want our boat ride to end. We saw so many playful whales, and we were filled with wonder.

If you are in the Cape and you enjoy marine life, I would definitely book a whale watching tour with Hyannis Whale Watcher Cruises. This is something I will suggest when I have out-of-town guests who want to visit the Cape. This was truly an epic experience.
